Frequently Asked Questions

What makes YAKU AMAZON unique from other lodges?

While lodges in the area have many units, we have three spacious bungalows making us truly exclusive and intimate.  Our bungalows may accommodate singles, couples and groups.  Each of these have their own personal deck facing Corrientes Lake.  There also is an upstairs common area with hammocks and an additional deck.  Your YAKU AMAZON  adventure is genuine, with animals observed in their natural habitat, NOT in captivity nor are you taken to a semi-natural setting.  Due to our unique size, your stay with us will include:  private guides, personalized itineraries and quality service.  You will discover your home away from home with us!

What to Bring?

Many guests ask “What should I pack?”

We suggest:  lightweight clothes – long sleeve shirts, long pants and long socks are recommended for walking and protection from mosquitos, short sleeve shirts, shorts, etc.  Other items include:  hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, mosquito repellant (high percentage Deet recommended), walking/hiking shoes, rubber boots (may be purchased in Iquitos or Nauta), sandals for around the lodge, bathing suit, poncho or raincoat, water bottle, plastic bag for dirty clothes as they may be damp, binoculars, flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries, book light with extra batteries, camera and charger, ziploc or dry bags to protect equipment from rain, medications, and toiletries.

You may have an opportunity to visit the native village Ayacucho and the school.  As an option, you may bring school supplies (pencils, erasers, etc.), toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair clips/ties, sandals, volleyball, soccer balls, etc.  Or you may shop their handmade crafts.

Regarding money, when in the village or for tipping, smaller bills (soles – the currency of Peru) may be needed.   US bills must not be damaged (no tears, no marks, no creases, or worn out).

How do I get to the YAKU AMAZON Lodge?

You will make your own travel arrangements to Iquitos.  Many international flights to Iquitos fly through Lima, Cusco, (Peru) or Panama City.  Once you arrive at the Iquitos Airport, we will meet you and take you to the lodge.  Flights should be booked to arrive before 9:00 a.m., as we depart from Iquitos to the lodge every day at approximately 9:00 a.m.  Thus, if arrival is in the afternoon, then you will spend this night in Iquitos.  We are happy to provide recommendations for quality hotels.  Your departing flight must leave after 6:00 p.m.  If your air travel does not work with our schedule, please contact us as we can make special arrangements.  We will need your travel itinerary in advance.

When is the best time to visit?

There are two seasons in the Amazon – a high water season and a low water season and both have something different to offer.  The Amazon has a high water period from December through May.  The rivers may be 33 feet higher (10 meters), so there are more waterways (rivers, creeks and lakes) to navigate through on the boat. The low water period begins in June and goes through late November.  During the low water, jungle trails are accessible that were flooded during the high water.  This allows for more opportunities to walk deeper into the forest.   The temperature, humidity or daylight hours do not vary much due to its proximaty to the equator at 4 degrees south.  Either time you choose, you will be in awe of the breathtaking views and opportunities.

Does it rain all the time?

Rain occurs in whichever season you choose to visit, but slightly more during the high water period.

What type of vaccinations do I need?

Please check the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for health information for travelers to Peru:  http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/peru

Is Malaria a problem?

Malaria has not been reported in the area of our lodge.  However, visit with your doctor to discuss medications for antimalarial, antibiotics and vaccinations.

What is included in the amount I paid?

Your lodging, food, excursions, roundtrip transportation to and from Iquitos and the lodge, and drinking water are included in your booking cost per person.  Incidental expenses, such as souvenirs, drinks (soda, beer, cocktails) at the bar, tips for the staff and naturalist, etc. are not included.  Please bring cash (soles or dollars), as credit cards are not accepted.  Dollars must be in extremely crisp condition (no tears, marks, or creases).

Is electricity available?

Electricity in Peru and at our lodge is 220 Volts.   Outlets are absent from the bungalows, but are available in the evening in the main lodge a few hours each evening for charging devices.  Most camera chargers, cell phones, and computers will work with 220 Volts, but we advise bringing an adapter not to risk damage to your device or equipment.

Will I have wifi?

While you are at the lodge, you will not have cell service or wifi.  This is an opportunity to connect with nature and remove yourself from the outside world.

How to confirm a booking and what is your cancellation policy?

To confirm your booking, a 10% deposit of the total cost must be made.  This is non-refundable if you cancel the tour.  Deposits may be made with MasterCard, VISA, American Express, MoneyGram, Western Union or a Bank Transfer.  Credit Cards will have an additional 5% fee.  We recommend the purchase of travel insurance to provide coverage for unexpected circumstances.
