Location

An important advantage of Yaku Amazon Lodge, is its strategic location.  It is located on one of the 1,100 tributaries of Amazon River, the Yanayacu River, approximately 140 km. (87 miles) southeast of the city of Iquitos, capital of the Loreto Region of Peru.  It is inside the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve and also adjacent to the buffer zone of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, a protected area of Amazon floodplain which is 2 ‘080.000 hectares, making it the largest in Peru and the second largest in South America.  It is one of the highlights of the Peruvian Amazon.

There are different means of transportation to reach the lodge.  By water from Iquitos, we sail up the Amazon River or we drive along the highway to San Joaquin village and then sail the Amazon River using a 200 HP engine.  Our fast and stable boat is equipped with a restroom, first aid kit and life jackets.   Either way to our lodge takes approximately 2 1/2 hours.

Yaku Amazon Lodge, is located on the Yanayacu River which means “black water” (in the language of Quechua-Inca), due to the darkness given by the decomposing leaves of organic matters.  As vegetation decays, tannins leach into the water dying it a tea or coffee color.  There are many endemic animals that live in this type of water which surrounds our lodge.

The lakes around our Yaku Amazon Lodge also have “black water,” making fishing and birdwatching more abundant.  The lodge is centered on a small tributary of the Amazon, where there is only one entrance and we are not impacted by the presence of fishing boats.  The lodge is intimate and solitary, surrounded only by nature.

Due to our remote location, Yaku Amazon Lodge guarantees the observation of many different species of birds, monkeys, sloths, dolphins, fish, caimans, butterflies, insects, etc. in their natural habitat, while also learning about the medicinal plants of the jungle.  Animals are observed in their natural habit, we do not show animals in captivity.
