Nauta and Pacaya – Samiria National Reserve 

Immerse yourself in the wonders of the Amazon River and the array of wildlife in the Pacaya – Samiria National Park.  Explore Nauta, interact with the animals at the CREA Amazon Rescue Center, and visit significant buildings or museums to discover the history of Iquitos.

7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Pick up from your hotel.

Depart from Iquitos to the town of Nauta.  Here we will visit Sapi Sapi lagoon, where you will observe the largest freshwater turtle in the Amazon, dragon fish, catfish, the largest fresh water fish on the planet the Paiche “Arapaima gigas”.

We will then visit the the small market of Nauta where you will discover the different products that come from the jungle by canoes, boats and rafts.  It is an opportunity to learn about the seasonal tropical fruits, different species of fish in the Amazon, and regional dishes, etc

Lunch in a local restaurant.

Embark on a Pamacari boat (a typical wooden boat with peque peque motor) for a tour in the Pacaya – Samiria National Reserve.  Here we will search for pink and gray dolphins, sloths, and birds such as cormorants, herons, kingfishers, hawks, etc.  and fish for piranhas and other species on the Marañón River.  We will also see the birthplace of the Amazon River – the longest, widest and most voluminous in the world!  It is located at the junction of two large rivers, the Ucayali River and the Marañon River.  At this union of the rivers, we will visit the town of Grau where we are able to have a viewpoint of 50 meters to observe and take photos of the birth of the Amazon.  There will also be an optional opportunity to buy handicrafts, which supports the local economy.

We return to Nauta.  On the way back to Iquitos, we stop at CREA Amazonian Rescue Center.  Here we find one of the four species of manatees in the world.  However, the Amazonian manatee is the only species that lives in the fresh water.  A local biologist will guide this tour.

5:00 p.m.

Return to Iquitos to take a city tour of the old buildings dating from the rubber boom era.  This includes the Iron House designed by the famous French architect Gustave Eiffel, the former 5-star “Palace” Hotel now a Peruvian army recruitment office, Main Matriz Cathedral or Mother Church and other buildings.

If you are not interested in the old buildings you can visit 2 museums, a historical ship museum that data from the rubber boom era and the indigenous museum that shares information and the customs on the different tribes that existed in the past and that currently exist.
