Yaku Amazon Lodge in collaboration with the village of Ayacucho, preserves and protects the environment in our area to maintain a pristine forest and lakes filled with diverse flora and fauna. Local rangers patrol the area, protecting the trees and animals. The huge area around our lodge is exclusive to our guests. Because of this, there is much to see and experience which is unique from other areas.
During excursions, discover many different species of monkeys such as tamarin, squirrel, capuchin – the most intelligent monkeys in the world, pygmy marmosets – the smallest monkeys in the world, night – the only nocturnal species from the rainforest, and red howler – the heaviest mammal in the entire rainforest and the loudest land animal on the Earth. Look for sloths – the slowest mammals on the planet, the wattled currasow – a species believed to be extinct 40 years ago, capybaras – the largest rodent on the planet that could weigh up to 60 kg, anacondas – the largest snake in the world which can grow up to 12 meters, and jaguars – the felines with the most powerful jaw on the planet. View birds such as macaws, parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, jacanas, herons, hawks, kingfishers, a ruminant bird called hoatzin-a prehistoric looking bird, etc. While on the water, watch the pink and gray dolphins play, fish for piranhas and other species of fish, search for rays, eels or electric fish, and do some night spear fishing. Visit local villages to learn their traditions and culture. And so much more!
A short walk behind the lodge takes us to a lake where we find the second largest freshwater fish in the world, the Arapaima gigas. This fish has a pseudo-lung, as it breathes air from surface into a swim bladder that opens into the fish’s mouth and acts as a lung. This makes a noisy, distinctive gulp that can be heard from far away. This is an adaptation to low oxygen conditions in the water. This fish may reach up to 4 meters long and weigh more than 300 kg.
In December, guests may have a unique real world experience to participate in communal work! The Ayacucho community gathers to catch hundreds of the one-meter long fruit eating fish Tambaqui or Gamitanas and some Arapaima gigas of two or two and a half meters long. These activities benefits the community as the fish are shared, eaten and sold. This occurs only once a year to allow for sustainability.
